Douglas Park Community Association is looking for new Board members!

We’re a small, welcoming community centre with a friendly board and caring, dedicated staff. Our mission is simply to provide affordable and quality facilities and programming to meet the diverse needs of the people of the Douglas Park community and to encourage community use and participation of the Douglas Park Community Centre.

What happens at Douglas Park Community Centre?

We are jointly operated by the Vancouver Park Board and the Douglas Park Community Association, and we provide pre-school and school-aged child care, and a wide variety of programming for teens and youth, pre-school children, adults, seniors, and people of all ages with disabilities. We are also proud to have a pottery studio, a fitness room, and a gymnasium.

What does the Board do?

We provide oversight and strategic direction to keep Douglas Park Community Centre financially sound and running efficiently, ethically, and true to its mission.

Who are we looking for?

While we’d especially love to hear from people with experience in finance, human resources, or early childhood education, we welcome anyone with skills, perspectives, and lived experiences who can help us serve our diverse community. We’re proud of what Douglas Park Community Centre represents and provides to the community, but we want your fresh ideas and unique perspective to help make it even better.

What’s the commitment?

Board members are expected to attend 8-10 evening meetings per year and join (ideally chair) at least one committee. Our standing committees include Finance, Human Resources, Programming, Licensed Childcare and Strategic Plan Advancement.

Last summer we initiated a Needs Assessment to learn more about how we can provide affordable and high-quality facilities and programs to meet the diverse needs of Douglas Park community. 

You let us know what was working, what needs improvement, and how we could better serve the community.

Thank you for participating in our survey last summer.

Here are our Top 5 Takeaways:

• Strong support for a spray park.
• A need for more in-person interactions.
• A desire for better fitness opportunities.
• Interest in a variety of programs.

As noted in our 5-year strategic plan, we would like to mark our retained earnings as an operating contingency of $457,492 and continue to earmark internally for a capital project #1 – Splash Pad.  Plans for this project have been noted in Board Meetings in throughout the current and prior fiscal years, with retained earnings and total internally restricted funds ($533,204) available for this purpose.

Hello Douglas Park!

We are so excited to be on the road to “normal” and to welcome the community back. As we have done since the beginning of the pandemic, we will be taking a thoughtful and graduated approach that is safe for all, but have no doubt, we are on our way!

In March 2020 the lights at Douglas Park Community Centre were turned off and we were all sent home to cope with the social, emotional, physical, and financial repercussions of the pandemic. By September 2020 DPCA was able to offer school age care, licensed preschool, and very limited programming which continued throughout the year. Here we are in late summer 2021 with a fall program guide that looks much more like “normal” and features classic events such as Fangtastic Halloween Fun Saturday, October 30; 10-12pm and Breakfast with Santa Saturday, December 4; 10-12pm, as well as new programs for kids such as engineering. Parent and tot gym will be back Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings starting September 13. Friday Youth Nights are also back. The exercise room will be reopening in September.

On behalf of the DPCA board, I would like to acknowledge the DPCA and Park Board staff at Douglas Park. It has been an exceedingly challenging time and they rose to the occasion. We are deeply grateful for their thoughtfulness, dedication, passion, perseverance, resilience and team work. Thank you! You really are the best!

Performance in the Park is providing our community with another summer of free live entertainment in our park and is attracting larger crowds than ever before. If you haven’t enjoyed a show yet, drop by the east field at 6pm any Thursday night until August 15th to enjoy a concert.

Our Douglas Park Community Day on June 22nd had the largest number of community visitors to date. Thank you to Alysha Manhas for all her hard work in organizing this spectacular event and to all the staff and volunteers who helped to make our event so successful. We would also like to thank our community partners and local businesses for their participation and contributions, and to acknowledge all those sponsors listed on page two for their support and generous donations.

Our Fall 2019 Recreation Guide features new programs including: Petite Patissiers (3-6yrs), Animal Kingdom Movements (2-4yrs), PeeWee Popstars (3-4yrs), Popstar Academy (6-10 yrs), Watercolour for Kids (6-12yrs), Beginner Hand & Wheel for Kids (10-12yrs), Throw Big or Go Home (Adults), Yin Yoga, Adult Tap, Perspectives in Meditations (Adult), Fit4Two Postnatal Sampler (Adult), Senior’s Yoga, Watercolours for the Scared Stiff (Adults), Perspective Drawing (Adult), Voice Performance (Adult) and many new workshops to try!

Mark your calendars this fall for the following special events: Fangtastic Halloween Fun , Saturday, October 26th 10:00am-12:00pm; Winter Pottery Sale, Saturday, November 9th 10:00am-2:00pm; Breakfast with Santa, Saturday, December 7th 10:00am-12:00pm; and Music with Marnie Family Concert (all ages) Sunday, December 1st 10:00am-1:00pm.

We are excited to see our community garden break ground with a variety of vegetables and herbs alongside a healthy meadow of pollinating plants. Come and be a part of this project – Generations of Growth: From Gardens to Community. If you have a green thumb or are interested in getting involved and making connections, contact the front office and leave your name and contact information. The community garden is located adjacent to the newly built playground. Come and check it out!

Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at 7:00pm. We are looking for new directors, in particular community members with accounting or finance backgrounds to join our finance committee. If you are interested, please contact douglasparkcc@vancouver.ca or see the front office. We look forward to including more voices from our community.
